Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak was the guest of honor at the IMED (Institute for Molecular Medicine) Seminar Series within the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA on Wednesday, October 19th.

The event was open to the public, free of charge and took place in room 132 of the Neuroscience Research Building Auditorium from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm.

During his playing days, Kupchak  won three championships with the Lakers  (1978, 1982, 1985).

After retirement, Kupchak served as the Lakers assistant general manager under Jerry West.

Shortly thereafter, the former North Carolina Tarheel decided to pursue an MBA at the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Finally in 2000, Kupchak was officially named the Lakers general manager after Jerry West left for a new gig with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The topic of the seminar on Wednesday was ’building success in science, medicine and sports’, but the most interesting anecdote from Kupchak was not related to science or medicine.

The most intriguing tidbit of the seminar was when the Lakers GM alluded to the imminent return of Phil Jackson to basketball, stating coaching or management as his likely destination.

Kupchak cited his close personal relationship with the “Zen Master” as the basis for his conjecture.

As fans of the NBA, all we can do now is wait and hope that Kupchak’s speculation is correct. But before Jackson can return, we need to get the NBPA and the owners to get a deal done!

Can D-Fish come through yet again?

I surely hope so.
