Dolphins Treading Hot Water

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Miami Dolphins

Brown was arrested and charged for DUI after failing to signal while changing lanes last Saturday night. Brown, a restricted free agent, is 28 years old.

It’s been a relatively tough off-season for the Miami Dolphins, legally speaking, and now the Miami Dolphins find themselves in hot water.

But it was probably Tony Sparano’s temper that began to boil over after reading the recent police reports involving his players. Now that’s one mustache I wouldn’t want in my face!

New York Jets v Miami Dolphins

Even though football czar Bill Parcells and co. have brought in an honest, working-class  mentality to South Florida football, some of the players (young and old) still can’t resist the temptations that go along with one of America’s top party hotspots. So goes the story of the Miami Dolphins off-season full of arrests, allegations, and drama.

It all started when defensive tackle and former Tennessee Volunteer Tony McDaniel was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly attacking his girlfriend during a dispute. Shortly after, veteran cornerback Will Allen got hit with a DUI just a couple of days after he declared that he would be a starter for the Dolphins this season despite the knee injury that kept him out much of last season.

It’s OK, Will, you still be a starter on my 2010 flip-cup team, as long as you call a limo in advance.

It really started piling on when another veteran, 35-year-old Jason Ferguson, was suspended for eight games  after violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing supplements. Although Ferguson adamantly denies taking steroids, this was the second time Ferguson has been suspended for violating the same policy (the first suspension took place with the Jets in 1999 when Ferguson tested positive for a banned substance called Nandrolone, an anabolic steroid).

Good thing for Jason that I follow the three-strikes-you’re-out method; so I’ll let this one slide as long as you don’t make the Dolphins regret resigning you to a one-year contract.

Then it all came to a head when Ronnie Brown added another DUI to the list after he was stopped just outside his hometown of Atlanta for failing to signal while changing lanes–talk about getting swerved.
Then Brown subsequently failed his sobriety test and blew nearly twice the legal limit, which is probably about half the score Charles Barkley racks up before going on Inside The NBA. Seriously, though, who pulls somebody over for not changing lanes? It’s not like Ronnie ever uses his signal when he’s running the Wildcat.
Contrary to what Parcells wants to think, the Miami Dolphins have turned in their lunch pails and work hats and have now given new meaning to the phrase, “drink like a fish.”
It’s distractions like these that are going to weigh this team down going into training camp. The days where you could put down a bottle of Dom Perignon and go out and pitch a perfect game are over. Players need to be role models and class-act citizens nowadays, because kids look up to them and expect more from them.
Or maybe just don’t get drunk and drive a car.
Take a tip from Ricky Williams. He may be staying at home and getting stoned out of his gourd, but at least he’s not out getting drunk and slapping his girlfriend. I mean you are making millions of dollars; I think you can afford a cab. Or you can call me at home. I’m available 24/7, and you are more than welcome to bring along whatever girls you picked up at the club. I’ll make sure and set the mood.
