After missing out on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn at the beginning of the offseason, the Miami Dolphins have bounced back nicely.  Slowly, but surely, the Dolphins have been adding depth to their roster, signing several low-key free agents over the last few weeks.  The fact that the team failed to sign a big name free agent takes nothing away from the extra talent that they added to key positions across the board.  The signing that garnered the most media attention was that of a former accountant who didn’t even play football in college.  It is a feel good story about working hard, taking chances, and catching the right breaks; all of the things that the Dolphins need right now.

The team also got a lift this week when the Dolphins’ most serious pass rushing threat joined the team for voluntary work outs.  Linebacker Cameron Wake had refused to take part in the offseason program and it looked as though he planned on holding out for a bigger contract.  The Miami Herald quoted Wake’s agent, Paul Sheehy, saying “Cameron felt like he needed to go in to speak to Joe Philbin face to face, man to man, out sof respect to him as a new coach…”  Whatever was said during that meeting seems to have made sense to the LB/defensive end hybrid, because he took part in the team workouts on Friday.

Sheehy also stated that Cameron was going to focus on football, and trust him to handle the business.  This could be a lot to ask of his agent considering that the Dolphins have around $5 million left in cape room, and they still need to secure next weeks draft picks.  This will leave very little left over to work any kind of deal for Wak, let alone one he would be happy with.  This is a situation that is going to get worse before it gets better.

Over all, the recent events of the last few weeks have the team in good spirits heading into Draft week.  The Fins hold the 8th pick and are hoping to fill out the rest of their roster with quality picks, and if Geral Manager Jeff Ireland is able to execute his plan, he may just be in position to win over a fan base that has been calling for his termination all offseason…Hey, if a guy can go from crunching numbers to playing pro ball, anything can happen.
