In the 2012 NFL Draft the Miami Dolphins drafted Ryan Tannehill out of Texas A&M  and paired him with his college coach Mike Sherman, who was hired as Dolphins’ offensive coordinator. Miami also added former Aggie star Jorvorskie Lane, who was undrafted in 2009 and had briefly been in the Lone Star Football League. Lane was thought to be a training camp body, but his history with Sherman gave him an opportunity to show he can produce at the NFL level.

Word out of Miami is that Lane has become much more than a training camp body. He is looking great to make the 53-man roster, even potentially as a starter. Lane was a running back for the majority of his college career, but when Sherman took over the Aggies program he moved Lane to fullback (senior season). At this point Lane weighed over 280 pounds (he was all the way up to 295 at his heaviest). He was a touchdown machine for the Aggies, but scored a career low five in his one season with Sherman (as a fullback).

At 5’11″ Lane is down to about 260 pounds, but he has not returned to his running back ways. He is a fullback. The west-coast offense Miami is installing may not require a fullback in all packages/scenarios, but word is he is impressing regularly in goal-line situations. Head coach Joe Philbin notes that you can hear the blocks Lane is making. He has been physical. Lane is also a guy who can catch the ball as an element of surprise at the goal-line. Plus, as a ball carrier he had a ton of TDs in college (and 12 TDs in his only Lone Star Football League season with the West Texas Roughnecks).

One area that Lane could see a lot of action is 3rd-and-short scenarios. Daniel Thomas was the short yardage guy in 2011, but he was a terrible 3 for 13 converting in these situations. Lane could be a spark-plug to improve that going forward both as a lead blocker, and as a ball carrier (also, as mentioned before, element of surprise to throw to out of the backfield)

Remarkable that Lane has not played professionally since a Lone Star Football League stint in 2010, yet it is looking like he is going to make the 53-man roster as a main cog for the 2012 Miami Dolphins offense.
