Prince Fielder Trade Watch: To The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Milwaukee Brewers have a shot to win the regular season NL central title. If they do that, they could have a shot to make it to the fall classic if Yovanii Gallardo, and Zack Greinke get hot. The problem is that ownership has no idea what to do with slugging first basemen Prince Fielder who likely will not fit into the teams budget moving forward.

The major risk is simply if the Brewers don’t trade Fielder, don’t make the playoffs, and watch Prince sign somewhere in the neighborhood of 175 million with another team- getting 2 compensation picks in return. That would be absolutely horrible for the Brewers moving forward, and something their fanbase won’t be pleased about.

I know this is a difficult decision for everyone involved, but the idea is to do what’s best for the franchise. In my opinion, the Brewers should trade Prince now, get the major return, and be in a strong position to put his excess dollars elsewhere in the team, while the studs they get in return get ready to play.

The team I think would match up with the Brewers would be the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Angels are only 3 games out in the west, and have as good a 1-2 punch as any team in baseball at the top of the rotation. This is a club that’s a bat or 2 away from being a major power in the American League, and Prince Fielder would do that. With the loss of Kendrys Morales for the year, and Mike Trout still a year away- there isn’t any immediate help coming. The problem with this large trade would be Prince Fielder signing an extension with the Angels. Failure to do so would mean that Mike Trout would not be in the package, thus making the trade of Fielder pointless for the Brewers. I don’t know if Prince would do it, and I don’t know what the Angels want to do with their budget, but in a perfect world- Prince Fielder to the Angels for a package involving Mike Trout would be as good as it gets for the brew crew.

First of all, it would be stupid of the Angels to rid themselves of Trout. Next, Fielder has a large chip on his shoulders and would distract from the team. Let the Brewers keep Fielder and do not let outsiders get involved in Trout’s contract. Keep his name out of your mouth. If the Angels can’t do it this year, oh well. They can figure out how to get a slugger for the year Morales is out, but leave the team intact of the good players and prospects who appear to be just what is needed to be successful.

I don’t see this trade happening. The Brewers would get run out of town if they traded Fielder while in the thick of the NL Central race, and the Angels would only do it if they could get Fielder cheap. I doubt they’d want him long-term – Kendrys Morales is due back next year, and they also have a very powerful rookie, Mark Trumbo, playing and developing at 1B this year – and likely again next year as they’ll probably DH Morales. So, I wouldn’t look for the Brewers to get Mike Trout in any deal for Fielder – nothing is impossible, but getting Trout away for the Halos is not going to be easy. As far as a lesser deal? I’d look for that only if the Angels felt Fielder would be a difference-making rent-a-player for the stretch run.
