Milwaukee Brewers sign Francisco Rodriguez for $8 million
The Milwaukee Brewers and reliever Francisco Rodriguez have agreed on a one-year deal worth $8 million.
Rodriguez was a free agent who was unable to get the right contract from another team so he decided to unexpectedly accept arbitration with the Brewers. He will be used as the setup man for closer John Axford this season just like he was last year. The Brewers will continue to have the most dominate tandem in the eighth and ninth innings which should make games a lot easier for the team.
This is a very good sign for Milwaukee as they attempt to keep the core of their bullpen together. With LaTroy Hawkins and Takashi Saito leaving via free agency it was crucial the Brewers bring back Rodriguez at a good price.
Milwaukee still has starting pitcher Shaun Marcum and relievers Kameron Loe and Jose Veras remaining in arbitration. If the Brewers can lockdown Loe for the seventh inning, Milwaukee will be a very difficult team to beat.
In 31 games with the Brewers, K-Rod had a 1.86 ERA, 33 strikeouts and held opponent batting average to .209 in 29 innings of work.
