Anthony Randolph Should Start at Center
If you have followed my writing here, I am a big believer in Anthony Randolph. Randolph has unlimited potential, and is only 22. However, it looks like both Darko Millic and Anthony Tolliver are ahead of him on the depth chart. If the T’Wolves want to make the leap, Randolph needs to start and here’s why.
Randolph isn’t even close to reaching his ceiling yet. In the case of Darko and Tolliver, they don’t have much room for improvement. In a limited amount of time last year, Randolph averaged 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in just over 20 minutes of play. Tolliver only managed 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 20 minutes while Darko averaged 8.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 24 minutes. It’s obvious to see that Randolph did the most while on the court. Randolph’s per 36 numbers were a stunning 21 points and 9.3 rebounds. Neither Darko or Tolliver can do that. Those are All-Star numbers.
Randolph is also extremely versatile. He can play the 4 as well. This could allow for a twin towers lineup with him and Darko or him and Tolliver. These would give the opponent a different look. This roster has lots of flexibility and the coaching staff should look to exploit it. Tolliver could hold down the lane while Randolph was able to roam and block shots, like a mutant Scottie Pippen.
The Timberwolves are one of the youngest teams in the league. Randolph has the chance to be a superstar in the league. The team should allow him to get the bulk of minutes at the center position. There isn’t a lot to lose. Either Randolph breaks out, or you turn back to the solid combo of Darko and Tolliver. If the T’Wolves hope to break out this season, Anthony Randolph needs to be on the floor as much as possible. With him, the sky is the limit.
