Twins to take 2nd game from Royals tonight, Liriano pitching

[picappgallerysingle id="9284841"]The Minnesota Twins are playing well right now, having just swept the division-leading Rangers, and now the Twins look to take a second game in a row from the Kansas City Royals with Francisco Liriano pitching. The Royals aren’t contenders in the AL central division at 23.5 games behind the Twins, but they don’t intend to play like it’s season-over.

The White Sox are contenders at 3.5 games behind the Twins. But if you’re attending a game at Target Field, don’t expect to see any White Sox game scores. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has asked the front office not to display them.

Too much tension, I guess. Let’s hope Tigers hurler Justin Verlander can show the White Sox a thing or two tonight. That would help.

Twins starting pitcher Francisco Liriano takes the mound tonight in an effort to earn his thirteenth win on the season – a career best for the Twins’ ace. According to ESPN, Liriano is undefeated since the All Star break in early July, pitching every seven days with an ERA of 2.17 (since the break) and 61 strike outs (which, at 58 innings, is more than one per inning).

Plainly said, the Twins have a better chance of winning when Liriano’s pitching. And that’s good, because the Twins could use another win tonight. The Minnesota Twins offense will face Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Brian Bannister.

And the Twins offense is mostly our A-game tonight, with the exception of Danny Valencia, who is still resting his tender hamstring. The Twins lineup tonight is as follows: Denard Span (CF), Orlando Hudson (2B), Joe Mauer (C), Jason Kubel (RF), Michael Cuddyer (1B), Jim Thome (DH), Delmon Young (LF), J.J. Hardy (SS), and Matt Tolbert (3B).

If there’s a lineup out there that can get it done, this is the one. Even without Justin Morneau and Danny Valencia, the Twins have a formidable offense. Here’s to hoping Liriano gets his deserved 13th win and the Twins up their stats to 7-1 for this home stand.
