2012 NFL Mock Draft: Rams Control Future of Justin Blackmon, Vikings

With the third pick in this year’s NFL Draft, the majority of Vikings’ fans would like to hear the name ‘Justin Blackmon’ called. After all, it would give Christian Ponder a true No. 1 receiver for years and years to come. It’s a very safe pick, that’s almost guaranteed to get immediate results. Well, what if the Rams want that same thing for Sam Bradford? This is a reality Vikings’ fans must consider on draft day, or they may be sorely disappointed.

So is it the end of the world if Blackmon isn’t available? Absolutely not. What it would do, is open the door for a variety of directions for Minnesota to take in the future. Do they go in a completely different direction and trade the pick? Do they take top OL prospect Matt Kalil? Do they go all in and take Robert Griffin III? So many fans have already penciled in Blackmon, that I don’t think they’ve truly considered the alternatives.

When you hold the 3rd pick, there’s no such thing as a bad alternative. Sure, there are 2 prospects that you may want on your team, that you can’t have, but this is something that you should have already made peace with. A team has to consider all options and scenarios on draft day, and take the player that has the most long-term benefits for the franchise. Who that player is for Minnesota, certainly is up for debate, but it’s tough to say that any of the top ten prospects would be a ‘bad’ choice.

All I can say for sure, is that Vikings fans better prepare to not get Justin Blackmon. Just because he’s not listed at the No. 2 spot on draft boards everywhere, doesn’t mean he’ll automatically be available for Minnesota. The Rams are in the exact some position as the Vikings, they’re building a foundation around a talented young quarterback, and need a ‘go to’ wide receiver for him. Blackmon can be that guy for any team in a similar situation, but especially for St. Louis and Minnesota. If the Vikings have their heart set on Blackmon, they better be ready to wheel and deal if his name is indeed called second. Whoever is selected by St. Louis with the No. 2 pick, will alter the future of the Vikings forever.

Much more draft coverage to come, including in-depth breakdowns on all the Vikings top prospects.

i can`t believe the viking would pass on a chance to get RG3 in the first round.a WO won`t help that much. the vikEs have to many proablems in there secondary alone to be able to help with just one top pick.I don`t think there close to being as good as the staff think they are and i find that kind of reasoning on there part disturbing!!! they need to fill more than a half dozen postions and ther is no way they can do that in the draft!!! get a franchise QB and start there!!!
