It had been speculated for the past few days, but confirmation has come Saturday night that Minnesota Vikings  are prepared to take running back Adrian Peterson off the active/physically unable to perform list as soon as Sunday, and further speculation is he could practice with his teammates on Tuesday if all goes according to that plan.

Peterson suffered a severe left knee injury, including a torn ACL, last Christmas Eve against the Washington Redskins, so he is now just shy of eight months removed from the injury as he continues to make excellent and rapid progress. Seeing him practice without restriction will be nice, but we really won’t know what he has to offer until he sees game action, perhaps in the Vikings’ third preseason game against the San Diego Chargers. Then we will all truly know how much progress he has made.

Peterson, as long as he avoids setbacks, looks on track to be ready for Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which he said was his goal all along. Assuming he is ready to go for the season opener Peterson’s workload will almost certainly be light early in the season and he is likely be used in a fairly specialized role, perhaps around the goal line at first as he gets himself acclimated. The Vikings don’t need to rush Peterson into anything he is not ready for or they deem him not to be ready for, as Toby Gerhart has proven to be capable when given the opportunity during his first two years in the league.
