Researchers at the University of Boston have begun their study of the brain of former NHL and Minnesota Wild player Derek Boogaard. After Boogaard’s death was caused by an accidental mix of alcohol and the painkiller oxycodone in May, his brain was donated to be studied for the long term effects of repeated blows to the head. The donation of Derek’s brain was a decision he made coincidentally a few months before his death, but his family also agreed to comply with his wishes. Derek Boogaard’s tragic death was the first premature death of three related to the NHL this summer. The Winnipeg Jets’ Rick Rypien (formerly of the Vancouver Canucks) was found dead last month. Wade Belak, who had just retired in March after playing most recently for the Nashville Predators, hanged himself earlier this week.
