Minnesota Wild players and fans are surely excited for tonight’s season opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets in St. Paul, but there will be a few somber moments before the opening faceoff.  The Wild plans on paying tribute to former players Derek Boogaard and Pavol Demitra before the first drop of the puck.  Both players passed away prematurely over the summer.  Boogaard died in Minneapolis as the result of an accidental mix of alcohol and painkillers, while Demitra perished in a plane crash in Russia along with 42 other people after the plane hit a signal tower on takeoff last month.

Minnesota has also announced that it will wear stickers on their helmets in honor of the two players this year.  These decals will be circles with the numbers 24 and 38, Derek Boogaard and Pavol Demitra’s respective numbers when they were with the Wild.
