St. Louis Cardinals look to end four game skid vs. Giants

By Aaron Kirn

The Redbirds are seeking a fresh start as they try and avoid a season-high five game losing streak tonight.

Hopefully the St. Louis Cardinals took their day off Thursday, and used it as a chance to refocus, hit the reset button, and make a push to regain control of the NL Central race.  They’ll have a “giant” task in front of them out of the gate… literally.

San Francisco (68-54) comes in to town for a three-game weekend series, and they’re a team struggling of late too.  The Giants are currently six games behind NL West leading San Diego.

St. Louis (65-53) trails Cincinnati, who continues to win after being swept by the Cards, by 3 1/2 games.  So while the divisions are slipping away from both teams, they’re still both in the middle of the NL wild-card race.  The Giants are one game behind the Phillies, with St. Louis right behind them at two back.

St. Louis has never faced tonight’s starter Madison Bumgarner (4-4, 3.27 ERA), and it will be the first time Jake Westbrook (7-7, 4.48 ERA) has ever faced San Francisco in his 11-year career.

Newly acquired 3B Pedron Feliz, will bat fifth in the Cards line-up after being picked up from Houston on Thursday.

There’s no doubt this is a pivotal series for the Redbirds.  The Reds aren’t going anywhere, and it’s time for the Cardinals to stop waiting around for them to falter.  It’s not going to happen this year, and if the Cards want the NL Central crown, they’re going to have to take it.

That mission begins tonight, first pitch at 8:15 PM (ET).
