According to ESPN Chicago, the Tampa Bay Rays are very close to trading SP Matt Garza to the Chicago Cubs in a multi player deal. Garza had his best season in the majors last season while going 15-10 with an ERA of 3.91.
The ESPN report states that the Tampa Bay Rays are looking to receive a shortstop, a catcher and some pitching prospects in return for Garza. This move will clear the way for Jeremy Hellickson to join the starting rotation.
The move to acquire a shortstop for the Rays though is a curious one. Reid Brignac has proven that he could be an everyday player at that position while Sean Rodriguez moves to second base.
Several teams have been in negotiations for Garza since the winter meetings. I would rather the Rays move James Shields and retain Matt Garza, but I understand that the Rays cn get more for Garza than they can Shields.
