Matt Garza is now going to be a member of the Chicago Cubs pending physicals of all the players involved according to Gordon Whittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times via Twitter. I am not certain that I really like this trade, I thought that Garza would provide some consistency in the middle of the rotation, but I guess Rays fans now have to be prepared to deal with the new reality of what 2011 is going to bring.
The trade deal did expand a bit from what I originally reported a few hours ago. The Rays are also sending OF Fernando Perez to the Cubs. And now the Rays are reported to get Sam Fuld also. Fuld was a college baseball star, but has had to deal with a series of injury issues. Fuld is 29, and after reading his resume, he reminds me of the variety of issues that Rocco Baldelli has had to deal with through his shortened career.Fuld will not be a playmaker for the Rays this year or anytime in the future.
I am sorry to see Matt Garza go. I understand the business aspect of the game and the confiscatory situation that the Rays are operating under, but it still hurts to see such a solid starting pitcher be shipped out. Rays fans, we all new this purging of the roster was coming after 2010, and that is what makes this so much more painful after winning the AL East last season and then taking the early exit from the playoffs, it was a successful and empty season all at the same time.
So, we bid farewell to another of our players, I wish Matt Garza the best going forward. And hopefully, the trade involving Garza will pay some dividends in the next few seasons.
