Former Pirates manager Chuck Tanner passed away this morning in his New Castle, PA home. Tanner was 82.
Chuck led the Pirates to a World Series victory in 1979.
At one point in that series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Pirates were down three games to one. Tanner woke up the morning of game five and learned his mother had died.
“My mother is a great Pirates fan,” Tanner told his players before the game. “She knows we’re in trouble, so she went upstairs to get some help.”
That help would be enough, as the Bucs turned the series around and took home their latest World Series championship.
He will forever have a spot in the hearts of Pirates fans as the upbeat manager who stole the ’79 Series.
Good luck, Chuck. We’ll see you up there.
