According to Dick Bremer and Bert Blyleven, Delmon Young will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after Wednesday’s game. Young was scheduled to start the game against the Rays but was a late scratch because he was unable to get loose enough to play. The injury bug just keeps striking the Twins as Young will join Joe Mauer, Kevin Slowey and Tsuyoshi Nishioka on the DL. To replace Young the Twins will call up Rene Tosoni from Triple-A Rochester. Tosoni has played in 18 games, hitting .288 with three homers and 16 RBIs. He can play all three outfield spots and has some pop in his bat. He doesn’t hit lefties all that well so I wonder if he may get some time in left field against righties in place of Jason Repko.
The addition of Tosoni comes as a bit of a surprise to me, as I figured Ben Revere would be the first man called up in this situation. But Revere has had a tough go of it, though, at Rochester, hitting under .200 in 17 games. This is the kind of scenario where Revere should stay put in Triple-A and try and find his swing. The Twins need some offensive help so calling up the guy who is hitting makes more sense.
Delmon Young hasn’t played since April 18, so he should be eligible to return from the DL in just around a week.
