Philadelphia Phillies First Baseman Ryan Howard in Awful Slump

The Philadelphia Phillies are already playing a bunch of backup-caliber players who don’t deserve to be in the starting lineup – Wilson Valdez, Ben Francisco, and Raul Ibanez. Now that the lone power hitter in the lineup is in a slump, the Phillies’ offense is certainly in a lot of trouble.

Ryan Howard is 0 for his last 23 over the last seven games. He’s seen his batting average fall from .275 to .236. In the month of May, Howard is hitting just .161 (10-for-62).

He certainly hasn’t been having any protection in the lineup. Chase Utley’s return should certainly help Howard and hopefully if Domonic Brown can hit as well as he has been doing in Triple-A, Howard will be getting a lot more assistance from his teammates.

Ryan Howard always has this kind of slump. Nothing new, he’ll be back. And as far as Francisco and Ibanez are concerned, who won it for the Phils last night?

I agree with you about Howard. He’s notoriously streaky and yes Francisco and Ibanez did have big hits. Congratulations on winning your case.

Most, if not all, of our players are batting well below their career averages. These under-achievers need a wake-up call.

The lineup needs to be invigorated with more leadership…hopefully, Utley’s mere presence will turn things around.
