Brian Matusz Pitches OK in Return from DL
Our inaugural substantive post of this season mentioned that the health of the two Brians (Matusz and Roberts) would have a lot to do with the Orioles’ performance in 2011. Naturally, both wound up on the DL before Memorial Day.
Buck’s Birds got one of the two back this week, with Matusz pitching decently (5 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 4 H 0 BB, 3 K) and Adam Jones donning his Superman cape to win the game. (Jones, who’s quietly having a good year, wasn’t so quiet in this game, making a catch in CF that was reminiscent of that other [ex] centerfielder Jones and hit the game-winning 2-run jimmyjack as well.)
According to the Baltimore Sun, Buck was pretty pumped:
“I don’t want to call it a big game, but I think emotionally it was a good win for us in a lot of ways,” the Oriole manager said.
Eh, we’ll see. Ending the 5-game skid was nice, but the June schedule is no cakewalk (with interleague matchups versus the Reds and Cardinals being particularly difficult). To be sure, it’s good to have one of the Brians back in the fold, particularly given the pitching staff’s performance so far. Unfortunately, however, Matusz won’t get to face the Mariners’ light-hitting lineup every time out.
Anyway, back home to the O’s gem of a ballpark for a series against Babe Bautista and the Blue Jays, who of late have owned Buck’s Birds. Get excited!
