Absolutely unfreakingbelieveable. Unbelievable. I just don’t know what to say. I’m sorry. I honestly almost cried. I stayed up until 1:54 AM to watch a…
Screw it. What a freaking joke. Absolutely ridiculous. There are so many words I’d like to type right now but can’t. It’s simply unfathomable that a major league umpire can blow a call to end a 19-inning game by THAT MUCH.
I might cry myself to sleep tonight.
Here’s a quick rundown: The Pittsburgh Pirates battled the Atlanta Braves for 19 freaking innings. Nineteen. The longest game (time-wise) in the long history of the franchise.
With runners on 2nd and third and one out, Scott Proctor hit a chopper to Bucs’ short stop Ronny Cedeno (or was it 3B Alvarez? Doesn’t matter). Julio Lugo sprinted for the plate. Bad idea, considering the throw was at home before Lugo was 3/4 of the way down the line. Lugo proceeded to slide into Pirates catcher Michael McKenry, who had the ball firmly in his glove. McKenry tagged Lugo on the knee, who started walking away without even touching home plate.
Then, it happened. The d-bag behind the plate called Lugo safe. My guess is that he wasn’t getting paid overtime.
Absolutely horrendous call. Turn on ESPN or MLB Network at any point tomorrow and you’re sure to see a replay.
Wanna make it worse? Proctor tripped out of the batters box. The Bucs would’ve had an easy inning-ending double play.

Still don’t believe it? How bout this angle.
This is quite possibly the worst call I have ever seen in the history of any sport. I played high school soccer, so I’ve seen some bad ones. But this is ridiculous.
UPDATE: ”Jerry Meals just made the worst officiating call in the history of organized athletics. He should be suspended immediately.” -CSN’s Casey Feeney
You thought Jim Joyce’s blowing Armando Galarraga‘s perfect game was bad? This was worse. Lugo was even more clearly out than the runner at first base.
To end a 19-inning game like that? To absolutely rob the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are battling for first place in the NL Central like that? To… screw it. Absolute joke.
Bud Selig needs to sit down and have a talk with whoever this umpire is, and, in the end, fire him. He clearly just wanted to go home. What a shame.
What a goddamned shame.
I truly don’t know what else to write. So much happened in this game, but to see it end like that just trumps everything else. Such a ridiculously encouraging effort from this banged up squad against one of the finest teams in Major League Baseball, and to be robbed like that…
EDIT: Jerry Meal is the umpire’s name. Feel free to send hate mail, and join me in the front row of PNC Park next time his sorry ass umpires in Pittsburgh.
UPDATE: Braves runner Julio Lugo told the media he couldn’t feel the tag. Watch his reaction after the play. I wonder why he has so unhappy about scoring the winning run?
