BJ Upton is Day to Day after crashing into The Trop wall

By Curtis Stelzer

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 last night at The Trop…behind another strong performance from Cy Young Award winner to be Justin Verlander.  Verlander is now 19-5 with still about 6 weeks to go in the season.  The Rays remain 7.5 back of the American League Wildcard leading Boston Red Sox.  The Red Sox were shut out 4-0 to the Texas Rangers last night.

But the big news of last night’s game was the loss of BJ Upton to injury.  Upton injured his shoulder reaching for a ball in the 3rd inning that was hit into the right-centerfield gap by former Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Delmon Young.  BJ went crashing into the wall.  Upton said after the game that it wasn’t the crashing into the wall that injured the shoulder…BJ said “I kind of over-extended my right arm.  Mostly it kind of went numb and started hurting a little bit.”

Upton wanted to stay in the game, but after making one practice toss to Matt Joyce…that was that and BJ was removed from the game.  After the game – the Rays staff said BJ is day to day and shouldn’t miss more than a game or two.  But – we all know how day to day has turned out from time to time.
