Tampa Bay Rays #3 prospect, RHP Chris Archer, has been promoted to the AAA Durham Bulls. Seriously, doesn’t every mound visit by the Bulls pitching coach have to consist of candlesticks?? Sorry, Bull Durham is one of my top 5 favorite movies and I will write and quote that movie A LOT! Anyway, Archer was one of the keys to the Matt Garza trade this past off season.
I’m not saying the light bulb has went on for this kid, but he has been much better lately. In 25 starts for AA Montgomery, Archer was 8-7 with a 4.42 ERA and 118 strikeouts. Chris’s WHIP was 1.61 in Montgomery – and I feel like that is a bit high to earn a promotion. But in his last 6 starts, he was 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA.
I am still curious about the timing of this promotion though. Archer’s last outing at AA on Monday – he went 4 innings, allowing 6 hits, 5 runs (all earned) and walked 5. Huh?? Great outing Chris…were sending you 1 step closer to The Show. But Archer had only allowed 2 earned runs or less in 5 of his last 7 outings. I am really interested to see how the kid fairs at AAA Durham to end the season. But if he is as good as they say – this Rays staff is about to be insanely sick in 2013 – James Shields, David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Moore & Archer. Daaaaaaaaang!
