ESPN has reported that Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade will not return next season. Theo Epstein met with Quade last week for about 7 hours, and clearly the conversation wasn’t good enough for Quade to keep his job.
I personally am thrilled with this move. Look- Mike Quade has been around for a long time. He’s managed in the minor leagues for a long time, and he’s been a major league coach for a long time. There is NOTHING wrong with that. He just isn’t a big league manager, and not capable of running an organization for a long season. Mike Quade is capable of adding knowledge to a big league club, but he has to be in the role to succeed. He was over his head and this is an outstanding move for the Cubs.
Now, Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have to get a manager. I personally believe it will come down to Terry Francona vs Ryne Sandberg with Sandberg having the upper hand. We’ll see what happens but it’s clear the Chicago Cubs management is going to shake things up from the top- all the way down to the bottom. Thank goodness and it’s about time.
