The New York Mets Could Turn to a Familiar Face for Closer’s Role
Before becoming a strikeout artist out of the bullpen, Octavio Dotel was a top prospect for the New York Mets. Thirteen years and eleven teams later, Octavio Dotel could make a return to his first home. The New York Mets are looking into the righty as a bullpen upgrade – perhaps even a closer. Octavio Dotel is far from a great long-term option, but that is not anything close to what the New York Mets need from the closer’s gig anyway. Despite being 38, Octavio Dotel presents a solid option for the New York Mets because he will come cheap and he will not cost a draft pick. Not only that, but he still has some skills. He walks a few more than you would like to see in an ideal world (4 BB/9 for his career), but he makes up for it with a high strikeout rate (10.9 per nine for his career). If it comes to it, this will be a good signing. There are several options on the market though so this may be an area that New York Mets fans have to wait to see upgraded.
