Yesterday there was a rumor that the Mets could be looking to trade promising young left, Jonathan Niese for Rockies OF Seth Smith. I’m not sold on trading Niese just yet. I think he could be a reliable 3rd or 4th starter in the big leagues. Smith is an interesting outfielder though. Last year he hit .284 and had 15 home runs for the Rockies. Granted, some of those home runs are courtesy of Coors Field and thin air. However, with the newly designed CitField, he could be an interesting option. The question is: Where would he play? Right now the Mets have Jason Bay, Andres Torres, and Lucas Duda penciled in as their starting outfield.
There is some thought that the Mets would make this move in order to make another move. One rumor suggests the Mets would target Gio Gonzalez by trading talented young 1B Ike Davis. Acquiring Smith would mean he could play right field and Lucas Duda could move in to play first base. Yes, it’s a bit of a stretch, but that’s why they are called rumors.
The question then becomes, are Gonzalez, Duda, and Smith better than Niese, Duda, and Davis? Tough call, only because I think Ike is going to be an All Star first baseman in the coming years. The ball jumps off his bat and it looks effortless. On the other hand, to get a talented young pitcher like Gio, I think you have to at least consider it.
All of this talk could be for naught, as it seems the Mets are not interested in the deal, per Metsblog.com. I don’t think the trade rumors are going away anytime soon. While I’m interested in seeing how players like Niese and Davis progress, the Mets HAVE to look to see what else is out there. If they can get a good deal to make the team better, I think they have to pull the trigger on it.
