Prince Fielder is the last high profile free agent left on the market. Pujols, Wilson, Reyes, and now Darvish have all found new homes. Now Prince and his agent Scott Boras take baseball’s center stage in the search for a new fifedom. The Cubs interest in Fielder remains unclear. The Mariners have reportedly make an initial offer to the slugging first baseman. The Texas Rangers, fresh off submitting the winning bid for Yu Darvish, could be playing fast and loose with their upcoming increase in local TV revenue. Toronto submitted a $50 million bid for Darvish only to lose out. They could direct that money towards a deal for Fielder, though Jays President Paul Beeston reportedly will not approve deals exceeding five years. The Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals remain on ther periphery of the Fielder talks but both clubs are longshot to land the free agent.
I’m sure Scott Boras would have gladly accepted a ten year deal for Fielder a few weeks back during the Winter meetings but now he has the spotlight to himself in his endless search for a sucker. I’d love to wake up and see Fielder sign with the Cubs tomorrow but I think this is going to take awhile. If I had to bet I’d put a five spot on Fielder being a Ranger in 2012.
