The Cubs were linked to free agent lefty Paul Maholm late last week. The newest rumor has Chicago interested in Jeff Francis, another free agent lefty. Francis, originally drafted by Colorado, pitched for the Kansas City Royals in 2011. Francis went just 6-16 for KC with an uninspiring 4.82 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. He won’t make anyone run out to buy an authentic Cubs jersey, but he could be an innings eater at the end of the rotation.
Francis has been a shell of his former self since his stellar 17-9 season for Colorado in 2007. He missed all of 2009 due to injury and at this point in his career seems to be a guy to give you about 170 innings with an ERA hovering around 5.00. I’d be surprised if he received more than a one year deal with the Cubs. Francis will turn 31 in January.
