As much as Prince Fielder hates to admit it he will always be linked to his father, Cecil Fielder.
Both players hit with tremendous power and racked up RBIs. Prince is clearly the better baseball player by far and away but over a three year stretch his father was the best in the business.
There are probably several reasons why Prince has yet to sign with a baseball team such as years, money and location. However, is it possible that Cecil is a contributing factor as to why no team is giving Prince the eight years he wants? Is it possible because of how his father’s career ended, it is now affecting how much money owners will invest in Prince?
It is no secret Cecil’s statistics declined as he got older, mostly because of the massive amount of weight he put on about half-way through his career. His career started out slower than his son’s did but over seasons five, six and seven both of them had very similar numbers.
Agent Scott Boras is telling teams how valuable Prince is and how much better he will make their team. Boras is correct, with the right protection Prince will single-handedly give any team a great chance to win. He has the power to make good players great by batting behind them. Unfortunately, what concerns general managers and owners is what happened to Cecil after those few great years.
It’s not like Cecil just fell off the face of the Earth. He still had really good numbers for seasons eight, nine, ten and eleven. They weren’t like his three great seasons but they were still pretty good for baseball standards. After Cecil’s eleventh season his numbers began to take a nose dive. He was just a shell of his former self and even though he stuck around for another few years, Cecil had eaten himself out of baseball.
Boras wants Prince to sign an eight year deal which could be devastating to a ball club if he turns out to be in anyway similar to his father. To invest $200 million into a player who won’t even be able to put up half his numbers in the second-half of the contract worries a lot of general managers. I understand it is hard to believe what happened to Cecil could happen to Prince but genetics don’t lie, regardless if Prince is a vegetarian or not.
Prince is a phenomenal baseball player who has the potential to be one of the greatest sluggers of all time. The dislike he has for his father may prove to be the difference in all of this. He may do everything in his power to make sure he becomes nothing like what happened to Cecil. I personally believe Prince could live up to an eight year contract because he seems to be destined for greatness.
For all I know the offers are coming in left and right for Prince, and Boras is just trying to get a bidding war between the different teams. However, I still have to believe this is something teams are considering and that is why we have yet to see any major news on who Prince may sign with.
