The time has come to do what so many players before you have done. They’ve struggled with the decision just as much as you probably have. They’ve wavered and waffled but eventually they realized that what they were going to do was for the best. Some have had press conferences and others have just released statements through their agents, you could do either. And then you can take out a page ad in every newspaper in the world thanking everyone for the support. You can do whatever you like just make sure you do it for good. Manny it is time for you to officially retire.
I’m sure you’re worrying right now that your image is tarnished and let me tell you that it is. I’m sure you can even see it when you look in the mirror each day while you’re admiring those dreadlocks of yours. I do have some bad news for you though. No matter what you do your image will stay that way. You can come back, if a team will sign you, serve your 50 game suspension, though I’m still not sure why it was reduced, and go on to have the best 100 game span of all time. But you know what? No amount of buffer is going to remove those stains. Manny the time has come to accept your fate.
In case you’ve forgotten you’ve had a remarkable career that few can rival. A .312 career batting average, 555 home runs and 1,831 RBIs, numbers that any player can be proud of. At this point in time it doesn’t matter if you’ve used steroids or any other performance enhancing drugs the time for that will come only when you appear on that Hall of Fame Ballot. Maybe you will get in like I believe you should but I cannot promise you anything. You’ll just have to take your chances.
Now if you think this is coming from a person who despises you, you’re vastly incorrect. You were one of my favorite players who led my fantasy baseball team to back-to-back championships. I stood up for you numerous times and still do. Sure I might have rolled my eyes a little every time someone mentioned: “That’s just Manny being Manny,” but I suppose you’ve earned it. Who can forget when the game got delayed because you disappeared into the Green Monster or when you made a running catch at the wall and proceeded to high five a fan after catching the ball or even when Hollywood became Mannywood? These are all moments that no one will forget and can be part of your legacy.
Manny, you’re no saint, you’re a baseball player. Your mistakes have been made and you are facing those consequences, it all just happens to be part of the journey. So Manny, do the right thing and retire.
