According to a report by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times the Rays have signed free agent Luke Scott to fill their vacant designated hitter role. Scott was non-tendered by the Baltimore Orioles in December. Scott posted solid numbers in his four years in Baltimore but he is an extremely streaky hitter. Scott was hampered by a shoulder injury in 2011 and hit just .220 in 209 at bats before his season ended due to surgery. The 33 year old Scott made $6.4 million last season but has apparently accepted a one year incentive laden deal. Terms haven’t been release but the deal is likely for much less than $6.4 million in guaranteed money Scott made in 2011. Scott is probably a reasonable gamble on a one year prove yourself deal for the budget conscious Rays.
