Prince Fielder to Tigers is good for Cubs
Prince Fielder has reportedly agreed to a nine year deal to join the Detroit Tigers. The news of Fielder heading to the Motor City is good new for the Cubs.
1) Fielder is not only gone from the roster of division rival Milwaukee, but he’s no longer in the National League at all. The Cubs may be rebuilding but the National League Central has been weakened this offseason.
2) The Tigers were rumored to be one of the clubs interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Detroit just committed more than $200 million to Fielder. It is highly unlikely that they have an additional $50 – $60 million to offer Cespedes. The Cubs and Marlins are now the likely favorites for Cespedes’ services.
