Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was declared a free agent last week after gaining residency in the Dominican Republic. The Cubs have been rumored to have interest in Cespedes for months. According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports Cespedes is being pursued by the Cubs along with the Marlins, Tigers, Orioles, and White Sox. Cespedes is expected to travel to the US in the next week or two to make visits and have face to face meetings with prospective suitors.
If the Cubs land Cespedes he will go a long way towards speeding up the team’s rebuilding process. Cespedes would likely be ranked among the top 20 prospects in baseball upon his signing. Cespedes could team up with Brett Jackson and the recently acquired Anthony Rizzo to give Chicago three of the top power hitting prospects in baseball.
