Charlie Morton Resumes Ground Ball Ways in Spring Training Debut

The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in their 10th game of 2012 Spring Training.

Pitcher Charlie Morton made his 2012 debut today, pitching two shutout innings. He scattered four hits and struck out two as he continues to recover from offseason hip surgery.

Of the nine batters Morton faced, seven of them put balls into play. Five of those were on the ground. We got used to seeing Morton keep essentially everything on the ground via his wicked sinker last season and I’m sure we’ll see more of the same this year.

Morton was initially expected to miss the beginning of the 2012 regular season, but it looks like he’ll be ready to go when his spot in the rotation rolls around come April.

Chris Resop allowed a solo home run in the fourth inning after pitching a perfect third frame, while lefty Tony Watson allowed a solo home run as well.

The Pirates didn’t record a hit until Gorkys Hernandez singled in the seventh inning. Starling Marte went 0-for-2, lowering his Spring average to .563.

Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen each went 0-for-2 with a strikeout.

Tomorrow, the Pirates get their first off day of the Spring before taking on the Baltimore Orioles behind James McDonald on Wednesday.
