The 4-1 lead the Pittsburgh Pirates held over the Baltimore Orioles in the second inning of today’s Spring Training game proved only momentarily surmountable.
A poor outing from starting pitcher James McDonald allowed the Orioles to score five times in his three innings pitched. McDonald allowed six hits, two home runs and two walks in his innings. He struck out two.
Tim Wood took over after McDonald’s three, getting three consecutive groundouts to kill the fourth inning.
Joel Hanrahan pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two and Evan Meek did the same with one strikeout.
Offensively, the Pirates had a good day from a starting lineup likely resembling the one we’ll see on Opening Day. Here are the lines:
1. Alex Presley: 2-4, 2 RBI, SB
2. Jose Tabata: 0-3, K
3. Andrew McCutchen: 1-3, RBI
4. Neil Walker: 2-3
5. Garrett Jones: 2-2, 2B, BB, RBI
6. Pedro Alvarez: 1-2, RBI, K
7. Clint Barmes: 1-1, BB, 2 RBI
8. Michael McKenry: 1-2, K
Starling Marte went 1-2 in relief of McCutchen in center field. His Spring average lowered to .556.
In the end, the Pirates collected 15 hits en route to an 11-5 victory, their fourth of the spring.
