In an attempt to regain assurance in the bullpen, the Cincinnati Reds claim right-handed pitcher Alfredo Simon. This coming after learning last week that projected closer and big free agent acquisition Ryan Madson will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2012 season.
Simon was waived by the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend. Simon spent four years with Baltimore and pitched in 78 games for them, sometimes as a reliever other times as a starter. He compiled an 8-12 record and recorded a 5.18 ERA. Simon also averaged 10.1 H/9 and 6.4 K/9.
The Reds are very short on relievers at the moment. Madson will not pitch this season, Jordan Smith will start the season on the disabled list after suffering elbow inflammation and Nick Masset will start the season on the disabled list as well with shoulder inflammation.
The Reds also have some prospects that may get some playing time during the season if the bullpen becomes uneasy. Andrew Brackman, J.J. Hoover, Kyle Lotzkar and Pedro Villarreal are all possible options to get moved up to the Reds’ bullpen at some point this season.
