A.J. Burnett Strikes Out Seven, Throws Seven Scoreless in Pittsburgh Pirates Debut

Right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett made his Pittsburgh Pirates debut tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals, and what a debut it was.

After giving up a lead-off walk to Rafael Furcal, a single to Matt Carpenter and another walk to Matt Holliday to create a bases-loaded no-out jam, Burnett struck out Carlos Beltran and David Freese before getting Yadier Molina to line out to second.

Burnett would then go on a streak of retiring 12 consecutive batters.

He ended the day with seven strikeouts, two walks and three hits in seven scoreless innings. He needed just 76 pitches, 53 of which he threw for strikes.

Kevin Correia was originally scheduled to start tonight, but was scratched with pain in his left leg. Burnett was supposed to make his final rehab appearance tonight, but looked great and was extremely efficient.

The Pirates lead the Cardinals 2-0 at the moment in the top of the eighth inning off of two RBI singles from Pedro Alvarez. All four of Alvarez’ hits this season have resulted in RBI.

Andrew McCutchen scored both runs and has two hits and a double on the night.
