Chicago White Sox Pitcher Philip Humber Throws a Perfect Game Against the Seattle Mariners
Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber joined elite company today, throwing the 21st perfect game in Major League history against the Seattle Mariners. The last perfect game we witnessed was when Roy Halladay went 27 up, 27 down against the artists formerly known as the Florida Marlins. Humber struck out nine hitters, including the last hitter Brendan Ryan in controversial check-swing fashion. He was efficient all day for the White Sox, reaching a full count to only two Mariners’ hitters throughout the game. He had three innings where he threw under 10 pitches total, and threw 96 total pitches in the perfecto. This is the first perfect game in Chicago White Sox history since Mark Buehrle did the deed – with the help from DeWayne Wise – in 2009 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Unlike most perfect games or no-hitters, there was no spectacular plays in this ballgame. The only ball that even gave me a gasp was the ball Seager hit in the 8th that Brent Lillibridge easily caught.
Humber, 29, was acquired last season in an under-the-radar move that has already paid huge dividends for the Southsiders. Last season, Humber broke out in the tune of a 3.75 ERA, or 3.58 FIP if you enjoy that sort of thing more. Philip Humber was one of the key pieces that the New York Mets sent to the Minnesota Twins in the Johan Santana deal, but he never lived up to the hype for the Twinkies. After failing to garner a spot in the Kansas City Royals rotation, the right-hander appeared to be another busted prospect, but that’s when the Chicago White Sox and Don Cooper gave him the chance.
Philip Humber fully proves why the Chicago White Sox have a chance this season, even though the Detroit Tigers have been unanimously picked across the board. Philip Humber is the 5th starter the team with a good bullpen. Pitching can win this thing, folks.
Congratulations to Philip Humber, the rest of the Chicago White Sox team, and their fans!
