The New York Yankees have started the season 10-8, that isn’t great but it isn’t bad either. They are doing ok, waiting for some of their big players to get hot and start carrying them offensively. Their bullpen is a strength but their starting pitching appears to be their weakness once again. They have CC Sabathia who started off slowly but that isn’t such a concern. He did have a good outing the other day and the time before that settled down after a bad first inning. Hiroki Kuroda their high priced free agent aquisition has been up and down, I think he will be ok but he has to be more consistant. Ivan Nova has been terrific for the Yankees once again but then the problems begin. Phil Hughes has been horrible and so has Freddy Garcia. Michael Pineda started the year on the DL and now it was announced on Wednesday that he will miss a full calender year with a torn labrum. What do the Yankees do now??
The Yankees do have someone by the name of Andy Pettitte down in Trenton getting ready. He will be a welcome addition to a staff that sorely needs him. He was though of as a luxury but not anymore. If Kuroda can get it together and be consistant then the Yankees will be ok with Sabathia, Kuroda, Pettitte and Nova. The other guys it doesn’t really matter what they do. The other problem now is what if someone else gets hurt?? The Yankees do have David Phelps on the roster as the long man. I would assume he will go down to AAA to be a starter when Pettitte comes back and Garcia will most likely go to the bullpen. Hughes could also wind up in the bullpen.
The next question becomes what is wrong with Hughes?? His stuff seems to be there, his velocity is up and he does have his pitches. His location has been terrible though. At least last year you could say he was hurt but he has no excuses this year other then just being bad. The Yankees have to hope he is off to a rough start but can correct it and will get better. His time is running short though, in the Yankees universe there isn’t much time to be patient. The Yankees are lucky that everyone in the AL East is bunched up and the Red Sox are on the bottom. If someone had gotten off to a great start then there may be more panic that ensued.
With the Yankees though there could always be a trade to be made. It is still only April and you never know what could happen in the next couple of months. There could be a guy from the minors who comes up and suprises. There could be a guy signed off the waiver wire who suprises, there could be a trade that is made or someone already on the team could step up. The Yankees and the fans will just have to wait and see what is in store for them.
