Aroldis Chapman, the Cincinnati Reds’ closer, has been gifted with other worldly talent. He has an arm that men have dreamed of for as long as baseball has been around. In addition, he is off to one of the greatest starts to a baseball season that anyone ever has had in the game. Here are some statistics for your consideration. In 28 innings of work, the Cuban Missile has compiled a record of 4-0 and 5 saves in 5 attempts. Chapman has struck out 50, allowed 7 hits and 1 run (unearned). Summarily, he has an ERA of 0.00. He is consistently throwing 98 or higher and has his breaking pitches going for strikes too. He is, undoubtedly, the most feared pitcher in the league.
All that being said, Aroldis Chapman has another streak going for him that just might destroy not only his career, but destroy his life too. Here is just a quick rundown of the last couple weeks for Chapman. First he was arrested for traveling 93 mph early in the morning on I71 and for having a revoked driver license. To make matters worse and bizarre, while in Pittsburgh, his “girlfriend” reported to being robbed at gun point in his hotel room. That wouldn’t be so bad, if it weren’t for the fact that she is a stripper and married to another man. Police suspect her as being the robber and making it all up. In the least, she has a problem keeping her story straight. Now, this blog is not about the stripper “girlfriend”, but about the decisions that Aroldis Chapman has been making lately.
In full disclosure, I am a huge Aroldis Chapman fan, as anyone who has read my blog will attest. However, he needs help and in a big way.
Baseball is a great, great game. It is fun to watch and play. It is Americana. But no matter what you think of the game, it is, in the end, a GAME. Life is different. In life, we make decisions that affect all aspects of our life. Chapman is making very poor choices. In addition to translators, Aroldis Chapman needs more help. In the very least, as one of my friends and fellow Reds’ fan said, he needs a handler. Now I don’t know anything about his relationship with God or his religious beliefs at all; however, given his latest antics and decisions, I am just going to come right out and say it….He needs more than just a hander, he needs Jesus. Baseball aside, he really needs to straighten out his life and start living for someone other than himself.
