In a draft that many felt really had no great players, the Cincinnati Reds have seemingly taken to insider information to select their first pick of the 2012 amateur draft in selecting Nick Travieso.
According to the Dayton Daily News, Nick Travieso is a teammate of Nicholas Arias at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Ranches, Florida. Arias is the son of the Director of Latin American Scouting, Tony Arias.
The Dayton Daily News reported Chris Buckley, the Cincinnati Reds’ senior director of amateur scouting, as saying, “Sometimes you feel you have a little advantage when you have that kind of information. He’s a very impressive young guy. He’s a very strong power pitcher (and) comes from a real good program, so we’re excited to have him.”
As a right handed power pitcher, Nick Travieso, can consistently hit mid-nineties. He can top out at 99mph when he needs to. He helped lead McCarthy HS to a state championship this year appearing in only 7 games, he finished with a 0.76 ERA, 70 strikeouts and 11 walks in a little over 46 innings of work.
The Dayton Daily News quoted Nick Travieso as saying, “I would describe myself as more of a Roger Clemens-type pitcher. I’ve always followed him my whole life. He’s always been my idol, and I feel like I have the same bulldog mentality he does when he pitched on the mound.”
Nick Travieso had committed to play for the University of Miami, Florida, but will certainly bypass that commitment to pursue his dreams with the Cincinnati Reds instead. I hope he can move along quickly and pick up good coaching in the Reds’ farm system. He will obviously need to develop his other pitches and control.
Here’s hoping that the inside information will pay off for the Reds and Travieso will be a great contributor in the very near future. You can’t have too much good pitching.
