The New York Yankees taking care of business over the New York Mets

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 4-2 on Saturday night.  They won 9-1 on Friday night.  The Yankees have won the series but would like to sweep the three game series on Sunday afternoon.  Why have the Yankees been able to win both games of this series and may be able to close out the sweep?  The Yankees starting pitching has been great like it has been in the last couple of weeks.

The Yankees offense is still hot and cold and if they don’t hit homeruns they don’t win games.  They will continue to have trouble with runners in scoring position because of their strategy.  They are a homerun hitting team and don’t really know how to hit in the clutch.  They don’t know how to cut down their swings and just take a single instead of swinging for the fences.  They hit two in this game and on Friday night they hit four including back-to-back-to-back.

Phil Hughes has really turned it around going 5-1 in his last seven starts with an ERA in the threes.  He has done a great job of being aggressive.  He is throwing strikes and using his fastball a lot with the curveball and changeup mixed in.  Hughes is a big key because if he keeps this up they have three legit starters and then you throw in Hiroki Kuroda and Ivan Nova and you really have something.  The Yankees will use four starters in the playoffs if they get there and everyone is throwing well.  The Yankees are a very dangerous team if they can throw out  CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes and Hiroki Kuroda in the playoffs.  They will be tough to beat if they continue to pitch well, the bullpen has been great as well even without Mariano Rivera and David Robertson.  They should be getting Robertson back soon and Joba Chamberlain and David Aardsma can be guys that help them down the stretch.

The main reason the Yankees have won these first two games against the Mets is their pitching.  The pitching has been great holding the Mets to three runs in two games.  The bullpen has been good along with the starting pitching of Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes.  Rafael Soriano has been great as the closer saving nine games in nine chances.

The Yankees have hit six homeruns in the first two games of their series with the Mets.  This is another reason they have won the first two games.  The Yankees when they hit homeruns are very good.  When they don’t hit a homerun they don’t have a win.  They are 0-13 in games that they don’t hit a homerun.  In looking for the sweep on Sunday they will look for Andy Pettitte to have a good start like he has done every time he goes out there.  They will also be looking to hit some homeruns knowing that will give them a greater chance of winning the game.
