The Yankees sweep the Mets in the Subway Series
The New York Yankees swept the three game series against the New York Mets. The Yankees won the first game on Friday night 9-1 but the other two games were much tighter. They won game two on Saturday night 4-2 and then on Sunday afternoon they won 5-4 on a walkoff homerun. Why were the Yankees able to sweep this series? I will take a look at the series and why they were able to win all three games.
The first game on Friday night the Yankees just blasted the Mets. The Yankees offense took over this game and they weren’t going to lose. The Yankees scored two in the second and four in the third and never looked back. They hit back-to-back-to-back homeruns in this game. Hiroki Kuroda also pitched very well but on this night he didn’t have too. Robinson Cano had a big game with two hits and four RBI.
The game on Saturday was a pretty good pitching duel between Phil Hughes and Dillon Gee. They each pitched into the seventh inning. Hughes continued to be very good and picked up his sixth win of the season. Rafael Soriano moved to nine for nine in save opportunities in this game. Mark Teixeira had a big hit in the game which was a two run homerun.
The Sunday afternoon game was a very good one. Andy Pettitte and Jon Niese were hooked up in a pretty good pitchers duel of their own. The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead, mainly because of a Cano error that lead to two runs. The Yankees were able to get a couple of runs in the seventh and then a couple of more runs in the eighth off of the Mets bullpen which has really struggled this year. The Yankees couldn’t hold the lead in the ninth though as Ike Davis connected for an RBI double to tie the game at four. It was the first blown save of the season for Soriano. The Yankees in the bottom of the ninth hit a walkoff homerun to win the game. Russell Martin was the hero hitting his second homerun of the game.
The Yankees won this series because they pitched better then the Mets. They also won this series because they were at home and they are a better team. The Yankees did have offense in the first game and then were able to hit just a little more in the other two games. They did get some clutch homeruns in the last two games of the series. The Yankees do hit homeruns, that is what they are known for and that is most of their clutch hitting. If they don’t hit homeruns they don’t win games.
The Yankees and Mets will see each other once again in a little more then a week at Citi Field. The Yankees will be playing the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals while the Mets will play the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles.
