The Texas Rangers are going through some injury problems regarding their starting rotation, and frankly- the Los Angeles Angels are coming fast which should force the Rangers hand. With the MLB Rumors season heating up around the Chicago Cubs, it’s clear the team is going to sell and sell quickly. The Rangers need a starting pitcher fast, and with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers being interested in Ryan Dempster or Matt Garza, the Rangers should put to use their deep farm system and get Matt Garza.
I know a lot of people don’t like trading prospects, but the Rangers are CLOSE to winning a title, and they should do everything they possibly can to get it. They’ve been close two straight years, and with the signing of Yu Darvish- they’re all in. They can’t be waiting for 19 and 20 year olds to develop when they’ve put a lot of money towards this roster.
How about, Jurickson Profar, Cody Buckel, and Kevin Matthews for Matt Garza?
Yes, it is going to take Martin Perez or Jurickson Profar to get Garza away from the Cubs, and it’s WELL worth it for the Rangers to do so. The Rangers have Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler locked up in the middle infield, and Profar is still a few years away. I know he’s going to be a very good player, but what if he’s not? Guys miss all the time in baseball, and no one is a sure thing. The Rangers should pull the trigger if it keeps most of their system in tact. Cody Buckel is a good looking youngster with 3 plus pitches, and an above average 4th. I have him graded out as a 2-3 man in the rotation at the big league level right now, and I think he’ll be a pretty decent arm for the Cubs. Kevin Matthews is a 5’11 LHP whom I like A TON. He’s still insanely young at 19 and not close to tbe bigs, but I grade him out as a future ace based on his stuff. This kid is still growing and it’s going to take some time, but he’s a solid addition to the farm system.
This would be a strong trade for both teams. Adding a guy like Profar is huge for the Cubs, and adding Matt Garza to the Rangers should push them over the top when Derek Holland returns.
Let’s see where Garza ends up for who, but the Rangers are taking a big risk if they let another AL team snatch Garza.
