The Cincinnati Reds got out their brooms and swept the New York Mets Sunday afternoon. The Reds defeated the Mets 3-1 to add the Mets to their list of series sweeps. This victory propelled the Cincinnati Reds to a season record of 38-27 and match a season high 6 wins in a row.
Johnny Cueto, the Cincinnati Reds’ ace, pitched a masterful game. He went 7 innings, allowed 6 hits (all singles), struck out 8, walked 1 and, most importantly, allowed only 1 earned run. He improved his ERA to 2.38 and raised his record to 8-3. He showed that he is the best pitcher in the National League again.
Sean Marshall closed out the game by pitching the Cincinnati Reds out of a 2 on, 2 out situation in the 8th and then a perfect 9th to pick up his 9th save of the season.
The Cincinnati Reds gave Cueto all the support he needed in the 5th inning after having fallen behind 1-0. With two out, the Reds finally put together a string of hits. One double, two singles and a throwing error and the Reds were up for good 3-1. Although the Reds had double digit hits in the game again, they struggled to push runs across the plate. But with Cueto on the mound, they didn’t need many.
The Reds were led at the dish by Zack Cozart (3-5, .264) and Joey Votto (3-4, .366). The two combined to have 6 of the Reds’ 10 hits and 2 of the Reds’ 3 runs.
The Cincinnati Reds will continue their road swing as the travel to Cleveland to take on their intrastate rivals, the Indians, on Monday evening. They will be going for their 4th straight win against the Indians and 7th overall when Mat Latos looks to extend his own personal win streak to 6.
I’m going to blog about this a later this week. Since April 19th, the Cincinnati Reds have the best record in all of baseball. Surprised, aren’t you?
