Lucas Duda hit the game ending double play as Carlos Marmol stabbed the line drive out of the air and threw to first to complete the double play and hold on to defeat the Mets 8-7.
A game in which Johan Santana didn’t have it for the second straight start against the Cubs. Santana gave up two home runs against Reed Johnson and Anthony Rizzo to put the Mets in an early hole. The Mets would come back late in the game, down 8-4 in the ninth inning, Chicago summoned their closer Carlos Marmol who loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Ike Davis. Davis ripped the pitch into right field to bring the Mets closer and the stage was set for Lucas Duda with the tying run on second and winning run on first. Duda pounced on a fastball and hit the ball right up the middle and was plucked out of the air by Marmol who threw the ball to first to end the game and escape disaster.
“I thought we had a chance with Ike (Davis) and Lucas (Duda) coming up, it was not meant to be” said Terry Collins.
There are no moral victories when it comes to professional sports, however, there are qualities that can define a team and the kind of ride they’ll take you on. Having played disappointing defense the past five seasons, this 2012 team gives the sense that when their backs are against the wall, they’re going to punch, claw, scratch, and fist their way back.
It’s a far stretch to say the Mets will win the world series this year, heck it’s a stretch to say they’ll keep this pace up and make the playoffs, but this group has experts sratching their heads.
Walk this Way!
The first quality is that the Mets lead the national league in walks. A trait that shows how patient Mets hitters are and always find a way to get on base. With an On base percentage that is sixth in the national league.
Offense Picks Up Poor Pitching
Santana and Dickey haven’t had their best stuff over the past two nights, however when Dickey gave up a run or two in the top half of the inning the Mets came back the following inning in his past two starts, one of which included a miraculous come back last night against closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Tonight Santana gave up three home runs and seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. However in a game that seemed over early, the Mets offense didn’t give up and was one hit away from stealing another game for the second straight night.
Ike Davis is Heating Up
I wouldn’t say that Davis is boiling hot but he’s gone from freezing to room temperature. In his last ten games Ike has blasted three home runs, driven in nine runs and hit .256, bringing his season average over the Mendoza line of .200
No, there are no moral victories in professional sports, teams do not get incentives for losing, but a game like tonight will sting, losing to a team that the Mets are clearly better than, the loss is a bad one, but the ninth inning shows a true grit of how this team will play down the stretch.
