Many MLB rumors focus on whether or not the Texas Ragners will be able to add a starting pitcher like Cole Hamels, Zack Greinke or Matt Garza. However, 19 year old shortstop Jurickson Profar continues to excel at Double-A Frisco. There is no need to rush Profar up the ladder as he is currently blocked by Elvis Andrus, but it has to be tempting to challenge Profar with a promotion.
Not only is Profar showing an uncanny ability to get on base, but he is showing a nice amount of pop too with nine home runs and 19 doubles. If I read this stat correctly, Profar has only failed to reach base in two games this season. Unbelievable. Keith Law has heaped high praise on Profar by ranking him as MLB‘s No. 2 prospect (behind only Dylan Bundy of the Baltimore Orioles). He has also suggested that it will be Andrus to vacate the shortstop position when it is time for Profar to make the jump to the big leagues.
Profar has already participated in the 2012 Texas League All-Star game and he is set to play in the Futures Game on Sunday. It’s probably too aggressive to say that he’s accomplished everything there is to accomplish at Double-A. With that said, Profar has performed well at each of his three stops in his young professional career (his 2010 numbers were a bit soft, but he was only 17) and by all accounts he has the mental fortitude to handle the challenge.
As most of the MLB rumors address the Texas Rangers’ ability (or lack thereof) to add a big name starting pitcher, keep an eye out for news regarding Jurickson Profar’s promotion to Triple-A Round Rock.
