MLB Rumors: New York Yankees Might Stand Pat at Trade Deadline

As we inch closer to the July 31st Trade Deadline, the New York Yankees have been prominently featured in the daily frenzy of MLB rumors.  Injuries to CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte have driven speculation that the Bombers might be looking for starting pitching depth.  Guys like Cole Hamels, Zack Greinke, Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza have been linked to the New York Yankees, but don’t be surprised if Brian Cashman opts to reinforce the team’s weaknesses from within.

One of the main reasons the Yankees may err on the conservative side is the new CBA and the rules regarding draft pick compensation.  In the past, a team could acquire a half-season rental at the deadline (i.e. CC Sabathia in 2008) and receive two compensation draft picks in the next year’s draft if/when that player left via free agency.  That is not the case anymore.  Normally the Yanks might be slightly okay paying full price for a guy like Dempster because they knew they could reload in the draft, but that may not be the case in 2012.

The Yankees have already sent David Phelps to Double-A Trenton to get stretched out as a starter.  In addition to Phelps, guys like Adam Warren and D.J. Mitchell may be given a few more looks.  It is important to remember that Sabathia is not expected to be out for very long.  The same can’t be said for Pettitte, but that still only leaves one open spot in the rotation – it’s not like we’re not dealing with the 2005 squad.

MLB rumors will continue to focus on the  New York Yankees for the next few weeks, but don’t be surprised if they’re spectators during the Trade Deadline action.
