So the MLB Rumors has it that the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to unload Cole Hamels from their roster. One team in the running must be the Cincinnati Reds. They would benefit greatly from getting a Hamels to, at least, finish out the season and make the playoff run they are positioned to make.
Let’s look at some very good reasons that the Reds should be willing to get Hamels:
-He’s young – 28 years old.
-He’s got experience – especially in the post season. He boasts a 7-4 record in the post season for the Phillies. His ERA is 3.09. How many of the Reds’ pitchers can you say anything like that about?
-He’s in his contract year. The Reds could go two ways with this, 1)rent him for the season and hope it pays off with a playoff appearance and wins, or 2)sign him to the 7 year deal that Hamels is reportedly asking for. The Reds have shown a willingness to sign their stars to long term high priced deals (see Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips), maybe that is a sign of things to come.
-He’s sporting a 10-4 record and and ERA of 3.20 for the season. Imagine the Reds’ starting four being Johnny Cueto, Hamels, Mat Latos and Bronson Arroyo. That is a very potent line-up.
The Phillies aren’t going anywhere this season. MLB Rumors suggests that with an aging team, they are ripe to unload and then reload. The Reds are going in the opposite direction. They are young, up and comers. They need the experience that a Hamels can bring.
The Reds should be willing to send off Mike Leake or Homer Bailey and a prospect or two to the Phillies to garner the services of Hamels.
