With MLB Rumors flying, the Cincinnati Reds are going to in the running for the postseason barring a midseason collapse I just don’t see happening. With that being said, the Reds are going to need to upgrade in the outfield because Drew Stubbs hasn’t developed the way everyone in and out of the organization had hoped. With that now a conclusion, I believe the Reds are the front runners to land Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino, and a deal could get done in the next 7 days.
I believe it’s going to take a package of Stubbs, LHP Amir Garrett, RHP Kyle Lotzkar, and RHP Wes Mugarian, to get Victorino and it’s a price the Reds should make in a heartbeat. Stubbs clearly doesn’t have a future in Cincy- especially if they replace him with Victorino, and the other prospects are high upside, but none slated as “can’t miss”.
This trade could make the Reds one heck of a team to beat down the road, and frankly- I hope the Reds go through with it. It’s a good baseball town, and the MLB is always better when smaller/mid market teams are in the race.
A hold up could be who is going to pay Victorino’s salary for the rest of the year. The Reds probably want the Phillies to pick up most if not all- and I’m sure the Phillies are trying to get the Reds to cover most if not all. If money is the last remaining hurdle, I consider this a done deal.
We’ll see what happens but it’s time for the Reds to strike now while the irons are hot.
