Three Lehigh Valley IronPigs Named to Triple-A All-Star Game

By Cody Swartz

The Philadelphia Phillies will be sending three members of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to the Triple-A All-Star Game – starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd, infielder Kevin Frandsen, and manager Ryne Sandberg.

Cloyd has a very good shot at being a starting pitcher for the 2013 Phillies. He is a 25-year old prospect who is having a phenomenal season at the Triple-A level. He was initially drafted back in the 18th round of the 2008 MLB amateur draft and has progressed steadily through the organization. He is 8-1 with a 2.01 ERA in 14 starts this season, and he has tremendous peripheral numbers – 2.0 BB/9, 6.5 H/9, and a 0.948 WHIP. Cloyd is 44-22 with a 3.30 ERA in 580.1 career minor league innings.

Frandsen was suspended for 50 games last year for testing positive for a banned substance, but he has rebounded in 2012 to hit .287 and rank among the league leaders in hits (81) and doubles (23). Sandberg was selected as a coach of the IronPigs, having been chosen by Columbus manager Mike Sarbaugh.

Frandsen is a 30-year old career utility infielder who has bounced around the league since making his major league debut back in 2006 with the San Francisco Giants. He is a .243/.302/.335 career hitter with seven home runs, 53 RBIs, and six steals in 626 plate appearances. Frandsen is nothing more than a fill-in at the major league level who is excelling with the Triple-A team, but Cloyd could have a very bright future with the Phillies.
